Orange Blossom — My Favourite Fragrance Ingredient & Why It's Pure Magic
Share
If I had to choose just one fragrance ingredient to take to a desert island, it would be orange blossom. Without hesitation.
There's something about this delicate, intoxicating flower that feels both ancient and completely modern — a scent that has been used in perfumery for centuries and yet never feels dated. Every time I uncork the bottle in our studio and watch a guest encounter it for the first time, I remember exactly why I fell in love with it.
What is orange blossom?
Orange blossom is the flower of the bitter orange tree, also known as Citrus aurantium. It's harvested in spring — mostly in Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt — and the extraction process is as beautiful as the flower itself. Steam distillation of the flowers produces what perfumers call neroli, a bright, luminous essential oil with a slightly green, almost honeyed quality. The absolute — extracted using solvents — is richer, deeper and more intensely floral.
Both versions appear in our studio at Per.Son.Elle, and watching guests choose between them is one of my favourite moments in every workshop.
Why I love it
Orange blossom sits in that rare and magical place between fresh and warm, between innocent and deeply sensual. It has a brightness that lifts a fragrance and a depth that anchors it. It plays beautifully with other florals like jasmine and rose, softens the sharpness of citrus notes, and adds an almost edible quality when paired with warm musks or vanilla.
It's the kind of ingredient that makes people stop mid-sniff and say "that's it — that's the one."
It also has a deep connection to memory. Orange blossom has been used in bridal traditions for centuries — in bouquets, in hair, in perfume — and for many guests it triggers something deeply personal. A holiday. A wedding. A grandmother's garden. Scent and memory are inseparable, and orange blossom seems to carry more memories than almost any other ingredient I work with.
How to wear orange blossom
Orange blossom is incredibly versatile. On its own it feels clean, feminine and effortlessly elegant — perfect for everyday wear. Layered with sandalwood or amber it becomes warmer and more mysterious. Combined with bergamot and neroli it transforms into something fresh and Mediterranean. Add a touch of oud and suddenly you're somewhere ancient and exotic.
In our workshops, guests who are drawn to orange blossom often create fragrances that are beautifully balanced — neither too sweet nor too sharp, with a luminous quality that lasts beautifully on the skin.
